Advent Reflection: Advent 1 (Year B) 1 Corinthians 1:3-9

As we approach the season of Advent/Christmas, it is important to reflect on the true meaning of this joyful time. It is a season of waiting, hope, and anticipation for the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In 1 Corinthians 1:3-9, Paul writes a letter to the church in Corinth, reminding them of the grace that has been given to them through Christ. As we read this passage, let us also be reminded of the gift of grace that we receive as we prepare our hearts for the coming of our King.

Verse 3: “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” Paul begins his letter by offering a greeting of grace and peace. Verse 5: “For in him, you have been enriched in every way – with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge.” Paul reminds the church in Corinth and us today that grace is not just about forgiveness, but it is about being enriched in every way. Through Christ, we have been given the gift of knowledge and the ability to speak in ways that would not be possible without Him. Let us continue to seek Him during this Advent season, and may our hearts be enriched with His wisdom and words.

Verse 7: “Therefore, you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.” Paul emphasizes that through grace, we do not lack anything, especially spiritually. As we wait eagerly for the arrival of our Savior, let us lean on His grace and power to equip us to do His work during this season.

Verse 9: “God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” Paul concludes this passage by affirming God’s faithfulness. He reminds the church in Corinth and us today that it is by grace that we have been called into fellowship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As we prepare for Christmas, let us remember that we do not have to earn this fellowship, but it is a gift freely given to us through grace.
