HISTORICAL CONTEXT
In 2 Kings 23, King Josiah of Judah is killed by Pharaoh Neco of Egypt in 609 BCE. This marks the beginning of the final twenty-three years of Judah’s history, as recounted in 2 Kings 24–25.
The first deportation occurred in 605 BCE when Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon defeated Egypt and took control of its vassal states, including Judah. He took some of the nobility and members of the royal family to Babylon. Later, in 597 BCE, Nebuchadnezzar returned to Jerusalem to suppress King Jehoiakim’s rebellion. He captured the king and his son Jehoiachin, taking them into captivity along with treasures from the Temple and palace, and about ten thousand people, including the prophet Ezekiel.
